Who Wore the Number 1 the Best?

I do not own this video. It belongs to nhl.com. Here is the handshake after the Montreal Canadiens eliminated the Washington Capitals during the NHL 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Halak was amazing.

Who Wore the Number 1 the Best?

It was Appropriately bizarre that on October 7, 1995, the night that Plante’s number 1 sweater was retired by the Motreal Canadiens, Patrick Roy was rocked for five goals on 15 shots before leaving the game at 2:12 of the second period in the Canadies’ eventual 7-1 loss to Philadelphia.
Plante was the colorful and innovative goaltender who backstopped five consecutive Stanley Cup championships for Montreal in the late 1950s and earned seven Vezina Trophies; Roy would go on to become the winningest goalie in NHL history. While Roy waded through the boos delivered by 17,646 people at the Montreal Forum that night, Plante’s son Michel was cascaded with cheers when he accepted a painting of his famous father during a center ice ceremonythat also included former Montreal goaltenders Gerry McNeil and Gump Worsle.
Plante, who sadly died in 1986, at the age of 56, also won lating fame for becoming the first goalie to wear a mask on a permanent

The Rain Maker Sports: Sports Bytes – May 13, 2010

The Washington Redskins invited former Philadelphia Eagles RB Brian Westbrook to camp this week for a visit. If Daniel Snyder signs any more past-their-prime veterans he’ll be able to approach AARP about naming-rights sponsorship to the team’s D.C. stadium . . .

What’s the reward for the winner of the Boston Bruins-Philadelphia Flyers series? A showdown against the sizzling Montreal Canadiens. First, the Habs shocked the NHL by eliminating the top-seeded Washington Capitals. Last night, they sent Penguins fans home in disbelief, eliminating the defending Stanley Cup champions in seven games . . .

I don’t understand how Manny Pacquiao can serve as a congressman while continuing to box. Is he going to “Tweet” his legislative votes from training camp? Honestly, I think he is doing a disservice to his constituents by continuing to box. How can he stay abreast of the nation’s issues while preparing for major bouts that will absorb all of his

U.s. Hockey Hall Of Fame, The Game Must Go On

U.s. Hockey Hall Of Fame, The Game Must Go On

The cases were payment from President Barack Obama who bet Harper that the U.S. men’s hockey team would beat Canada in the gold medal game at the Vancouver Olympics. The taste of victory for Canada must have been sweet. The 3-2 Olympic overtime U.S. upset against Canada on February 28 still lingers in the minds of many U.S. hockey fans. It was so close. Despite the disappointment, the U.S. men’s hockey team played well and had a great run. The game must go on.

The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame is still accepting nominations from the public for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2010. USA Hockey called last year’s class one of its best classes of inductees. The undefeated 1998 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team represented by team captain Cammi Granato won the first Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey in Nagano, Japan, defeating number one team Canada, twice. The team was credited with being a major contributor to the growth of girl’s and women’s hockey in the

Not Air Hockey Tables: Hockey Movies to Inspire Pt. 1

You won’t find any air hockey tables in these realistic portrayals of hockey struggles. Check out these great hockey movies today to inspire you to greatness on and off the ice.

Slap Shot

You aren’t a true hockey fan until you’ve seen “Slap Shot,” the 1977 hockey themed film with Paul Newman and Michael Ontkean. The story is about a minor league hockey team who resort to using violent hockey tactics to gain fame and notoriety in their hometown. The film has gained a huge legacy as one of the greatest hockey themed movies of all time, largely because of its humor and scenes of violent hockey play.

The Sweater

Based on a popular Canadian tale about growing up in the seclusion of Quebec, Canada in the 1940s. A huge fan of the Montreal Canadiens, when his team sweater wears out his mother writes a note and sends money to order a new one. Because of a language mix up, the company sent a Toronto Maple Leafs sweater that the young boy is

Look out for Detroit, Ottawa in Stanley Cup Playoffs

Look out for Detroit, Ottawa in Stanley Cup Playoffs

History is on the side of the Red Wings, about 4-1 in a consensus of several sportsbooks odds-makers. Of 21 trips to the finals, the team has carried home the cup 10 times. The Senators, 5-1, have captured the cup only once: 1926-27.

Detroit posted the NHL’s best record, 58-16, successfully blending an aging core of players and a stellar group of youngsters. But the Red Wings must dispose of early round foes quickly so they can survive a possible grueling seven-game war in the finals.

Leader Steve Yzerman is playing like he did when the team won back-to-back cups starting in 1996-97.

His 1,300th career point in the playoffs boosted him to second all-time on the team. Experiencing his first championship, the center was third in overall playoff points. The following year, the longtime Red Wings captain, 40, led playoff scoring with 24 points.

Nicklas Lidstrom, maybe the top NHL defenseman, dominates with quick puck movement and

History of the Buffalo Sabres

History of the Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres are a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League.  They have been with the NHL since 1970.  The Sabres, along with the Bills of the NFL, are beloved among western New Yorkers but both teams have been on the wrong end of many of the most devastating losses in sports history, causing many to believe in the Buffalo Sports Curse.

The Sabres, along with the Vancouver Canucks, began play in 1970.  Given its northern location and proximity to Canada, Buffalo had become a hotbed for hockey and was a logical destination for a professional team.  The first owners were Seymour Knox III and Northrup Knox.

The first two seasons of the Sabres’ history were highlighted by the drafts of center Gilbert Perreault in 1970 and winger Rick Martin in 1971 and the late-season trade for winger Rene Robert late in the 1971-72 season.  Perreault set a record for rookies by scoring 38 goals in his first year.  The record

The New Favorite on the New Jersey Devils

Rookie goaltenders have had success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs before – most notably with Ken Dryden in 1971 and Patrick Roy in 1986, both leading the Montreal Canadiens to the Cup – but never before has a crop of rookie goalies dominated the playoffs like they have this season.

Of the five remaining teams in this year’s playoffs, three are led by rookie goalies and another by a first-year starter. Carolina’s Cam Ward, Buffalo’s Ryan Miller, Anaheim’s Ilya Bryzgalov, and San Jose’s Vesa Toskala have all enjoyed incredible playoff success thus far.

Seven-year veteran Dwayne Roloson of the Edmonton Oilers, who was acquired in a mid-season trade with the Minnesota Wild, is the only experienced goaltender left. I don’t think anyone would have predicted that, especially with the presence of such big-name goalies as Martin Brodeur and Miikka Kiprusoff, and other veteran backstops or NHL powerhouses like Detroit’s Manny Legace, Dallas’s Marty Turco,
